Arteta told game-changing signing can be difference-maker for Arsenal

Arsenal have been told to do all in their power to secure the January signing of Georginio Wijnaldum as he would prove a “real leader” and someone who can make a real difference to their side.

Mikel Arteta is slowly beginning to stamp his mark at Arsenal, with the Gunners back in the hunt for a top-four finish. That said, defeats like that one suffered at Everton on Monday shows they still lack a little bit of backbone and know-how. Having led at half-time, that is not a game Arsenal should have lost.

The Gunners have invested heavily on their midfield over the past two seasons. Thomas Partey and Albert Sambi Lokonga have both been brought into the engine room. Martin Odegaard, meanwhile, has also been added in an offensive midfield role.

As such, it’s little surprise to see Wijnaldum linked with a move. The Dutchman departed Liverpool over the summer, making a free transfer switch to PSG.

However, the move to the French giants has not worked out as planned with game-time at a premium. Indeed, our exclusive highlighted the posibility of Wijnaldum returning to the Premier League.

Arsenal signing of Wijnaldum mooted

But with Newcastle mentioned as potential suitors, a report this week also named Arsenal as prospective suitors.

And with Arteta refusing to close the door on that possibility, Danny Mills has told Arsenal why he’d be an astute signing.

Speaking to Football Insider, the pundit reckons Wijnaldum can prove a difference-maker to their midfield.

“If you could get him it would be a fantastic signing,” Mills said.

“Why wouldn’t you take him? He’s proven that he’s a really good player with experience of winning things.

“He could make a real difference to that midfielder. If you could get him it would be a fantastic signing and a real leader.

“Even if it’s on loan until the end of the season, I think it would be a good signing.”

Wijnaldum not happy at PSG

Wijnaldum has featured 10 times for PSG, though only 10 appearances have been from the start.

Indeed, Mauricio Pochettino is struggling to find the best role in his side for the Champions League winner.

And the midfielder has already made clear his lack of happiness at his role under the former Spurs boss.

“I can’t say I’m completely happy,” Wijnaldum told a Netherlands press conference about life in Paris.

“The situation is not what I wanted. I have played a lot in recent years, was always fit and also did very well.

“This is something different and that takes getting used to. I was really looking forward to the new step and then this happens. It is very difficult.

“That’s football and I’ll have to learn to deal with that. I’m a fighter. I have to stay positive and work hard to turn it around.”
