Lucas Digne has been heavily linked with a number of clubs after an epic fall out with Everton manager, Rafa Benitez, and it now looks like he could be well on his way to making a move during this transfer window.
What’s the word?
Journalist, Alan Myers, has revealed further information on Digne’s reported move from Everton to Aston Villa, which has been building momentum over the last 24 hours.
Myers was asked by a Twitter follower if there was any idea on the expected fee for the move, to which he responded;
“Not yet, Everton looking for around £30m I believe.”
The Toffees left-back has fallen out of favour in the squad and has not been seen in the starting XI since the Merseyside Derby after a rumoured conflict of opinion with his current manager over tactics during a training session.
Rumours of a move for the 28-year-old Frenchman were fuelled even further after Benitez signed a new left-back on the first day of the transfer window opening, with Vitaliy Mykolenko joining the club and making his first appearance in the side during the 3-2 win over Hull City on Saturday.
Aston Villa are now expected to sign the defence, with popular transfer insider, Fabrizio Romano, confirming the developments on Sunday evening.
Fans will be gutted
Digne had become a fan favourite at the club, after playing for them over the last three and a half years, offering consistency and reliability in the team, with 127 appearances, six goals and 20 assists during his time, so it is no surprise that they will be gutted to see him go.
Fans took to Twitter as the news of a move to Aston Villa broke, to express their disappointment.
One fan Tweeted:
“Seems like Digne is leaving and i’m gutted, had a rough patch recently but still one of our most creative players. £25million is not enough either, easily one of the best left backs in the league.”
It’s easy to see why, too, as the Frenchman has very rarely missed a game since joining the Goodison Park outfit, featuring in 30 games or more in each of the three campaigns he’s spent in England.
Since then, he’s won the Nations League with his country and regularly played a part in a side who won the last World Cup. To lose such an experienced player, therefore, especially one with his quality would leave any fanbase rather gutted.
Benitez, on the other hand, will surely be delighted about the move, as it appears that the expected move confirms the pair were unable to repair their fractured relationship, not even enough to include Digne in the team since their exchange of cross words, and the Spanish manager will likely be further thrilled at the potential boost that the deal could add to his transfer spending pot.
The current Everton manager has been struggling to win the fans over during his season so far, with many match goers booing him, planning protests and leaving Goodison Park early, so this latest move from Benitez could only damage his reputation further if fans don’t respond well.
