"Word this morning": Craig Hope drops big NUFC injury claim that'll leave fans buzzing - opinion

A big Newcastle United injury claim has been made over the fitness of Javier Manquillo…

What’s the latest?

Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope has revealed that the Spaniard has not suffered a long-term injury after coming off during their Premier League clash with Aston Villa.

Kieran Trippier also came off and is set to be out for a number of weeks with a broken foot, with the former Liverpool full-back potentially coming in for him at the weekend.

He tweeted: “Trippier’s likely deputy is Javier Manquillo. He, too, went off injured on Sunday & [Eddie] Howe feared ankle ligament damage. More results are awaited but word this morning was that there is hope it’s not too serious.”

Buzzing

Newcastle fans will surely be buzzing with this news as it suggests that the club have not been handed a double injury blow in the same position this week.

Although supporters will be gutted by the injury to Trippier, they will be thankful that Manquillo appears set to deputise for him instead of Emil Krafth.

The England international has been in phenomenal form since his move to St. James’s Park in January, averaging a WhoScored rating of 7.87 and scoring two goals in his four matches in the Premier League.

Manquillo, meanwhile, has averaged a score of 6.61 in the top-flight across 15 matches, scoring once and registering two assists.

Whilst this is a considerable drop-off from Trippier, it still has him 7th in the squad overall. The Spaniard has made 2.9 tackles and interceptions combined per match, showing that he is able to get stuck in and win his challenges to regain possession for his side.

Krafth, on the other hand, has averaged a score of 6.33 in his eight outings. He has made 2.3 tackles and interceptions per game, whilst providing zero goals and one assist. This shows that he has performed to a lower standard on a consistent basis in comparison to Manquillo.

Therefore, fans will surely be buzzing that the Swedish international will not be called up for an extended run of games in place of Trippier. He has proven that he is not good enough at this level, with his statistics, and the supporters will not want to see him in the starting XI in crucial Premier League matches.

Therefore, they will be buzzing with Hope’s claim that the 27-year-old, Manquillo, is not set for a long-term injury layoff. It may not alleviate the concern surrounding Trippier’s absence, but it is still a boost for the Magpies and one that they can be pleased with.
