Arsenal legend Ian Wright thinks Divock Origi should re-think his decision to leave Liverpool following the events at the recent Merseyside derby.
Liverpool beat local rivals Everton 2-0 at Anfield, with Andy Robertson breaking the deadlock in the 62nd minute. He then was joined on the scoresheet by centre-forward Origi. The Belgian came off the bench to head past Jordan Pickford from close range.
That header took Origi’s record against Everton to six goals in just 10 appearances. His next best tally against a single club is three.
Origi has harnessed a reputation as an impact sub under Jurgen Klopp and always seems to pop up with important goals.
However, his spell at Liverpool could come to an end once the season is up. Origi’s contract expires on June 30 and he is likely to secure a free transfer elsewhere.
AC Milan is the most likely destination for the 27-year-old, who has 32 caps on the international stage.
While reacting to the recent Liverpool victory, Wright said Origi should change his mind. This would allow him to maintain his special bond with the Reds faithful.
“You know what was really cool was the ovation Divock Origi got when he was just warming up,” the pundit said on his Wrighty’s House podcast (via HITC).
“He should stay. I know people say he should go and play somewhere else. But why would you want to leave this Liverpool side when you have a role where you’re not even playing for a certain amount of minutes, but the fans are happy to see you? And he always delivers.
“You have to be a special player to do this. I can’t remember too many who have played that role for so long who don’t seem to be unhappy doing it.
“Why would you want to leave Liverpool? What Origi does, is that in important games, they call for him and he answers the call every time.”
Liverpool fans will be hoping Origi has at least one more big moment in him before his exit is potentially confirmed.
It could occur in one of three competitions. Klopp’s men are hunting glory in the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. They have already won this season’s Carabao Cup, setting up a possible quadruple.
