Newcastle pushing to sign "irreplaceable" £35m wizard, just imagine him & Pedro - opinion

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United‘s pursuit of Jack Harrison in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has claimed that the Tyneside club are still pursuing a deal to sign the Leeds winger before next Thursday’s transfer deadline.

He tweeted: “#nufc still pushing for signings. Pedro & Harrison remain in play. Pulisic & Gallagher loans being discussed. Conversations held over last few days about Paqueta but no bid. Alvarez at Ajax of interest. But gap in valuations remain too big to get any deals done at this stage.”

Football Insider have added that the Whites are looking for a fee in the region of £35m for the 25-year-old, after rejecting two bids from Newcastle.

Imagine him & Joao Pedro

Keith Downie has claimed that the Magpies are hopeful of getting a deal done to sign Pedro from Watford, and the Tyneside club could get the best out of the Brazilian by signing Harrison to partner him in attack.

The Hornets attacker only scored three goals in 28 Premier League matches in 2021/22 but he was playing in a team which was relegated from the top flight and he had an Expected Goals (xG) return of 4.45. This suggests that his team-mates were not providing him with many clearcut opportunities to find the net, as they ended the season second from bottom.

Meanwhile, Harrison produced 3.45 Expected Assists (xA) on his own last term, after racking up a whopping 7.52 xA in the 2020/21 campaign, and he has shown throughout his top-flight career that he is full of creativity.

He created a whopping 13 ‘big chances’ and registered nine assists in his first two seasons in the Premier League and has enjoyed a phenomenal start to 2022/23. The 25-year-old has one goal and three assists so far this term, also creating three ‘big chances’ in three outings for the Whites.

Harrison has averaged four key passes per game for Leeds this term. Meanwhile, Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin’s two per match tops the charts out of the Newcastle players who have featured in all three matches so far this season.

These statistics suggest that the wing wizard, who TEAMtalk editor James Marshment dubbed “irreplaceable“, is capable of offering a huge creative threat out wide, and he could be the man to get the best out of Pedro at St James’ Park if both players end up at Newcastle.

He could be the player to provide the Brazilian with the service that he was desperately lacking in the 2021/22 campaign with Watford.

Just imagine both of them joining the club in the next week or so and lining up alongside each other in attack for the rest of the season and beyond, linking up to create and score goals in the Premier League…
