Left for peanuts, now “statistically one of the best”: Wolves may rue Nuno's 2021 call - opinion

While Wolverhampton Wanderers are languishing in the bottom three of the Premier League, one of their former academy talents is starting to fulfil his potential in League One with Burton Albion.

Terry Taylor was seen as an exciting prospect with the Old Gold and made his senior debut for the club in a Carabao Cup game against Aston Villa in 2019.

That would prove to be his only senior appearance for the club however as he was allowed to join Burton when he was just 19 in February 2021, with the manager at the time Nuno Espirito Santo clearly feeling that the teenager wasn’t ready to make an impact on the first team.

Former Burton manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was full of praise for Taylor upon his arrival at the Pirelli Stadium, saying:

“He has big potential and the sky is the limit – whatever he wants to achieve, he will achieve.

“He’s not played that many men’s football games yet but we’re really excited that he’s chosen us to come to for two-and-a-half years, there was a lot of interest in him.”

The Wales U’21 international has gone on to make 51 appearances for the Brewers, in which he has failed to score but has managed three assists.

Despite their struggles this season, which sees them occupy a relegation spot in League One, Taylor is certainly catching the eye with his performances and looks destined for a career higher up.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke shared some of Taylor’s recent stats on Twitter, writing:

“Taylor is statistically one of the best 21 & under performing defensive midfielders in Europe. Taylor in very good company here amongst defensive midfielders.”

He added: “Taylor is starting to fulfil his potential with regular first-team football and he has been instrumental in Burton’s recent improvement under Dino Maamria. It won’t be long before some bigger clubs are making moves for Taylor.”

The stats shared by O’Rourke rank Taylor ahead of the likes of Jude Bellingham and Romeo Lavia, so while he is playing at a lower level, it is easy to see why he is being talked about.

If Taylor can continue to improve and perhaps earn a move to a higher division, then Wolves may end up regretting their decision to let him go in 2021, especially if their own poor form continues and they find themselves in the Championship next season.
