Mowbray drops promising injury update before Swansea, it's a big boost for Sunderland - opinion

Sunderland make the trip to south Wales this afternoon to take on Swansea City in the Championship, and Tony Mowbray will be hoping that his team can pick up all three points from their visit to the Liberty Stadium, especially with the latest injury boost to his squad.

What’s the latest?

The Black Cats manager took to his pre-match press conference to give a promising update on Dennis Cirkin’s inclusion in the squad travelling to Swansea for the clash this afternoon.

Mowbray told the media: “Dennis will be travelling with us, so we’ll make a decision on him.”

It’s a big boost for Sunderland

Mowbray will be searching for solutions to get Sunderland back to winning ways against Swansea, and the potential for Cirkin to return to the starting line-up is a big boost for the Black Cats.

The talented left-back has been important to the success and development that the Wearsiders have enjoyed over the last 12 months, making 49 appearances since he joined in the summer of 2021 and continuing to be a reliable performer this season in the second tier.

In eight Championship appearances this term, Cirkin has made 1.5 interceptions, 1.6 tackles and 2.8 clearances per game, while also winning the majority of his duels (56%) and completing 50% of his dribbles.

The 20-year-old has been lavished with praise for his presence in the back four since joining Sunderland from Tottenham Hotspur, with Stadium of Light legend Kevin Phillips saying last year: “Cirkin has come in and settled so well. He is young, has a great left foot and bombs forward. You can see that he is not afraid to get crosses in and have a shot as well.

“Defensively, which is key for me, he’s very good as well. Left-back is a specialist position and you need someone like him in that role.”

The Black Cats will be frustrated after three successive draws, and a fresh perspective on the left flank could be the difference in inspiring a victory in south Wales this afternoon.

Cirkin could be a game-changer for Sunderland if he is available to start against Swansea, and Mowbray will be hoping that his return can have a positive influence on the team.
