Rangers manager Michael Beale has been backed to get the very best out of Todd Cantwell following his recent move to Glasgow from Norwich City.
What’s the latest?
The Gers brought in the 24-year-old earlier this month following the Championship side deciding it was time for him to move on to a new club.
With the Englishman’s contract at Carrow Road set to expire at the end of the current campaign, Rangers made him the first signing under Beale’s tenure.
And speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Pete O’Rourke has suggested Beale’s history with young players will give Cantwell the best opportunity to rediscover his best form:
“Michael Beale has a real proven track record with young players as well throughout his coaching career. So they’ll be hoping that he will be able to get a tune out of Todd Cantwell as well.
“So I think if Rangers can help him rediscover his best form, it can only be good news for the club.”
Ready for change
Cantwell was experiencing a difficult spell during his time at Norwich with just nine league starts in the Championship to his name (via Transfermarkt).
And in those nine games, Cantwell had failed to provide the Canaries with either a goal or an assist.
Prior to Beale’s time working with Steven Gerrard at Ibrox, Beale was working with the Liverpool U23 squad where he helped to develop some household names.
Ryan Kent was a player who Beale insisted people kept an eye on for the future back in 2017 when the current Rangers ace was out on loan with Barnsley:
“There’s also Ryan Kent on loan at Barnsley who is fantastic and could literally – if he manages to get his decision-making right – go on to be a top player in the Premier League for Liverpool, England and beyond,” he said.
Having helped to develop the current Liverpool star, Trent Alexander-Arnold, there will surely be a belief in Beale to be able to help Cantwell find the form from a few seasons ago when he was playing in the Premier League.
The Englishman’s best run of form came in the 2019/20 campaign where he was able to provide Norwich with six goals and two assists in the English top flight.
Perhaps the inconsistency at Norwich in being promoted and relegated has not helped Cantwell’s progression but he will not have to deal with that at Ibrox.
However, he may have to deal with another type of pressure with the Gers fighting at the top of the Scottish Premiership which will be interesting to see how he handles this.
But under Beale, perhaps Cantwell will have a manager who will be able to nurture him back to his best form with the experience of working with young players he will carry with him to Glasgow.
