YouTuber Conor McGilligan has slammed the quality of corners and other crosses at Leeds United and claimed that Javi Gracia will be working on them in training.
What’s the latest on Javi Gracia and Leeds?
After sacking Jesse Marsch at the start of February, the Whites finally managed to appoint a new manager and it paid instant dividends in his first game.
Indeed, Gracia oversaw a crucial Premier League home win at Elland Road over Southampton on the weekend, which lifted Leeds out of the bottom three.
Despite the win, there is still plenty to work on before the club can consider themselves safe from the threat of relegation and it seems as though crossing is an area that could be improved.
Indeed, when speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, McGilligan noted (16:00): “This needs to improve, doesn’t it? Corners were crap as usual.
“I think I was pulling my hair out at some point. It just seems that, you know, the short corners weren’t really working. And then the balls into the box, I mean, there was one which bounced before the first man.
“I think that’s something that I’m sure Gracia will be focusing on.”
Will Roca start for Leeds again soon?
Leeds have scored 29 goals this season in the league, which is more than the three teams below them and the two sides immediately above them.
With that in mind, the club’s ability to attack isn’t necessarily their biggest problem but set-piece goals can be a great way to score when the quality of football is low, so it’s not hard to see why McGilligan feels as though this could be an area for Gracia to work on and get results within the short term.
When you look at the Whites crossing stats against Southampton (via SofaScore), they completed just six out of 26 attempted (23%). Clearly, there is room for improvement in that department.
Incidentally, Leeds have attempted 400 crosses this term, which is the 13th fewest in the division – with Manchester City top of the list with 533. It will be interesting to see, then, if Gracia tasks his team with lifting that number during his reign and if the players can respond with a better standard of delivery.
