Wilson eyes Rangers swoop to sign "impressive" £5m gem, could be bye-bye £8.5k-p/w dud - opinion

An update has emerged on Glasgow Rangers and their interest in bringing Norwich goalkeeper Angus Gunn to Ibrox in the summer transfer window…

What’s the latest on Angus Gunn to Rangers?

According to The Scottish Sun, Ross Wilson knows the English shot-stopper from their time together at Southampton in the Premier League and is keeping tabs on the player’s situation.

The report claims that the Gers are tracking the 27-year-old as they are on the lookout for a new number one to take Allan McGregor’s place at the end of the season.

It is stated that Gunn is open to the idea of switching his international allegiances to Scotland, despite once being called up by England’s senior squad.

Bye-bye Allan McGregor?

Micheal Beale and Wilson could wave bye-bye to the £8.5k-per-week Rangers number one in the summer by securing a deal to sign the Norwich cat.

The 41-year-old veteran’s contract expires at the end of the season and the Light Blues could move the experienced dud on to make way for an upgrade between the sticks.

In the Premiership this season, McGregor has averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.77 and saved 59% of the shots on his goal in 15 starts for the club.

Last term, the ex-Hull man averaged a rating of 6.76 and stopped 66% of the efforts against him and made three errors directly leading to goals for the opposition.

Meanwhile, Gunn has been in fine form for Norwich in the second tier of English football. Manchester City reporter Simon Bajkowski once hailed him as “really impressive” and his statistics in the Championship this term back that claim up.

The colossus, who joined the Canaries for an initial fee of £5m from Southampton, has averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.94 across 14 appearances in the division – saving 74% of the shots against him.

He has been competing with Dutch international Tim Krul for a spot in the starting XI and won the battle in 14 of the club’s last 17 league matches.

Gunn has only conceded 17 goals from an xG faced of 20.7 and this means that the former England under-21 international has prevented 4.7 goals more than the average goalkeeper would be expected to save, which shows that the titan has been an exceptional shot-stopper this season.

The ex-Manchester City man has also only made one error leading to a goal in the last two seasons, including a spell of nine starts in the Premier League last term, and these statistics indicate that the Yellows star could be an excellent addition to the squad.

McGregor’s shot-stopping statistics in comparison to the Norwich gem’s suggest that Beale and Wilson would be improving the Rangers backline by securing this transfer and that is why they could be waving bye-bye to the Scottish stopper in the coming months.
